Paris is about to be occupied by Germany. Marie-Laure and his father Daniel living in Paris, go to Marie-Laure’s great-uncle, Etienne in Saint-Malo to take refuge. The father keeps a diamond of the museum where he worked until he is arrested and dies on a trip back to Paris. Marie-Laure and Etienne later join in resistance against Nazi Germany, together with Etienne’s housekeeper Madame Manec. Etienne provides his radio transmitter to help the resistance.
After being trained as a soldier, Werner Pfennig tracks down Etienne's radio transmitter but keeps it safe. The Nazi official, Von Rumpel, tracks down Marie and her father's house in Saint-Malo because of tracing the diamond. After the bombing of Saint-Malo, Marie-Laure, Werner and Von Rumpel have a major intersection. Werner kills Rumpel, and Marie leaves the diamond in a grotto with a key given to Werner.

Werner doesn’t take the diamond. He is imprisoned and gets ill, and finally dies by accident. Then, his friend Volkheimer takes his possessions to his sister, Jutta.
